"11th
Goodwood Festival of Speed"
Over the weekend of 11th to 13th of July The Goodwood Festival of Speed was run
by the Goodwood Road Racing Club to the now famous formula of bringing as many
beautiful historic Formula 1, Indianapolis, Sports Racing, GT, Can-Am Sports,
Touring Cars, and many historic early forms of automobile rarely seen outside of
a museum to Goodwood House to run up the now famous hill. Lord March whose
brainchild this was some 11 years ago and his team also try very hard to
reacquaint as many original drivers with the cars in which they achieved the
successes which made them famous, whilst mixing in current F1 cars driven by
their drivers.
Although this event clashed with the FORCE Classic Grand Prix event at Dijon
(run the same weekend) it is without doubt one of the greatest motor sport
events in the world and for this the 11th year the GRRC arranged to bring back
the highlights of the "first ten years".
Blazing hot sunshine bathed the record 158,000 crowd who attended the event over
the 3 days who were treated to a motor sport spectacle which this year featured
the Ford marque who provided the spectacular "front of house" display
depicting the 1, 2, 3 scored by Ford at the 1966 Le Mans 24 hour race with GT 40
MkII's (the winning car driven by Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren on that
occasion).
As in previous years a number of regular FORCE entrants were invited to run
their cars at the famous event and this year was no different.
For 2003, (as for the past 2 years) Lorina McLaughlin was invited to run her ex.
James Hunt McLaren M23 (06) DFV in the event, and Lorina entered her car to be
timed whereas others purely entered to take part in "Demo" runs.
Amongst other FORCE regulars who ran at the event were Andrew Wareing who
actually turned up with 3 cars, his ex. Niki Lauda Ferrari 312T from 1975/76
which he had on static display and no less than two Williams F1 cars. Andrew ran
his customary Williams FW 06 DFV in which he has raced in FORCE events
throughout the past season for it's original driver, the 1980 World Champion
from Australia - Alan Jones. Andrew also used the Goodwood Festival to debut his
"new" Williams FW 07C DFV from 1981 which has been a long term project
for Andrew but he finally finished the car earlier in the week of the event. The
car looked resplendent in it's white and green livery and runs a full width
front wing (similar to that used on Ferrari F1 cars of the period). Andrew spent
the weekend enjoying the FW 07C whilst Alan Jones drove the FW 06.
Between the FORCE McLaren paddock stand and that occupied by Andrew Wareings
Williams and Ferrari cars yet another FORCE regular had set up camp for the
weekend, the team in question being "US Elf Team Tyrrell" run by John
Delane who turned up with two cars for the weekend. John chose the Goodwood
event to debut not one but 2 cars "new" to him. Prepared by Hall and
Hall, John debuted the very first F1 Tyrrell, the Derek Gardner designed 001
(still owned by the Tyrrell family but returned to it's original glory with
John's help to enable him to race the car in FORCE events in Europe and historic
events in the U.S. on behalf of the Tyrrell family).
Whilst we were aware of Tyrrell 001's rebuild going on in preparation for John
to return the car to the circuits this season we were unaware of his recent
acquisition of Tyrrell 006 DFV from 1973 (another Derek Gardner design) which he
ran during the weekend for son Ryan Delane. John explained that he had acquired
006 from a collector in Canada and was going to have the car rebuilt by Hall and
Hall before bringing the car out in FORCE events in 2004.
On Sunday morning Sir Jackie Stewart was reacquainted with 001 when he drove the
car in a demonstration run up the hill. A wry smile and "Yes it is"
came from Jackie when the comment was made "..just like Oulton Park in 1970
eh Jackie", (as the car was originally debuted by Jackie in the 1970 Oulton
Park Gold Cup).
When the Tyrrell 001 was debuted at Oulton Park, no one had seen it before and
it was a complete surprise as Ken Tyrrell had Derek Gardner build the car in
secret (the team were running March 701's for most of the season). Jackie
Stewart finished 7th in heat 1 of the Gold Cup. The team then took 001 to Canada
where Jackie qualified the car on Pole position for the Canadian GP at St.
Jovite but retired due to a broken stub shaft. Jackie raced 001 at the US and
Mexican GP's in 1970 qualifying 2nd fastest for both but finishing neither.
Jackie Stewart raced 001 to start the 1971 season in the South African GP in
which he finished 2nd from pole and 3 non championship events (the Race of
Champions - finished 2nd, Questor GP in Ontario - finished 2nd and the Oulton
Park Spring Trophy - finished 3rd), before switching to 003 for the rest of the
year in which he became World Champion for the second time.
Other FORCE regulars Rick and Rob Hall were busy driving a variety of cars
(including a V16 BRM P30 from 1953 and a Vanwall from 1957 amongst others from
the Donington Collection), in addition to running cars for others, including the
Tyrrells for John & Ryan.
On Sunday evening when all the timesheets were checked, Lorina was awarded the
fastest recorded time for Class 16, it was congratulations all round as Lorina
collected her trophy and bottle of champagne from Stirling Moss and Lord and
Lady March.
For the record, the fastest time set all weekend went to Graeme Wight Junior in
his Gould GR51 Cosworth hillclimb car with a time of 42.95 seconds.
